The PhD program in Legal Sciences includes 17 scientific-disciplinary groups covering research areas ranging from private law (civil law, commercial law, maritime law, labor law) to public law (constitutional law, criminal law, administrative law, tax law, ecclesiastical and canon law), civil and criminal procedural law, European and international law, as well as the fields of forensic medicine and criminology and the fields of historical-legal (Roman law and ancient law, ecclesiastical and canon law) and philosophical-legal studies, including legal informatics.
The PhD program is a third-level university course whose primary objective is to train scholars capable of conducting high-level research in the field of law, developing in-depth and specialized scientific skills.
Thanks to its varied educational offering, the course provides doctoral students with a solid, cross-disciplinary foundation that can be tailored to their scientific and professional interests. In agreement with their tutor, and in compliance with the minimum teaching requirements, each doctoral student can build an individualized program that promotes the development of specific skills in their areas of greatest interest.
The training program places particular emphasis on international experience. To this end, numerous international agreements have been signed to enable doctoral students to enhance and improve their research skills through stays abroad at leading universities (joint supervision and international agreements).
The PhD degree, awarded at the end of the program, is a fundamental requirement for pursuing academic and scientific careers, both at Italian and foreign universities and within public or private research institutions. In addition to the academic field, this qualification also opens up important opportunities in more practical and operational professional sectors, such as central and local public administrations, private companies, or international institutions.
Expected employment and career opportunities
Career opportunities mainly concern academic and research careers, with the training of profiles equipped with a solid legal culture, advanced methodological skills, and critical abilities.
Alongside training aimed at specialization in research, the course also aims to provide students with a solid and cross-disciplinary education, useful for accessing the main traditional legal professions. The course prepares professionals to work as legal experts in complex social and institutional contexts, where law interacts with economic, cultural, and political phenomena. In particular, these contexts include the practice of law, access to the notarial profession, competitions for the judiciary, and management roles in public administration.
The teaching program is therefore structured to ensure theoretical and practical skills that enable doctoral students to face the various challenges and new demands of the world of work with awareness and competence, including those related to the advent of Artificial Intelligence.
