Requirements for doctoral students.
TEACHING
As decided by the Faculty Board on November 14, 2019, each doctoral student must attend 32 hours of conferences and seminars on “common teaching” each year, out of a total offering of at least 40 hours (32 hours compulsory) and 20 hours of “sector-specific teaching.”
Courses classified as compulsory by the Teaching Board are excluded from the total number of hours of common teaching. Doctoral students who certify that they are engaged in work (within the permitted limits) are required to attend 16 hours (half) of common teaching. In addition, working doctoral students must submit a quarterly report on their research activities. These reports must be sent to the Secretariat and the Course Director by the following deadlines: February 28, June 30, and October 31. The first two reports (February 28 and June 30) must be accompanied by a few lines of introduction written by the respective tutors; the last report, on the other hand, must be presented orally, as for other doctoral students. In the case of a study abroad period of at least three months at a foreign university affiliated with our University, the obligations regarding common teaching will be considered fulfilled with this stay, upon presentation of a certificate/attestation proving the experience acquired.
CERTIFICATION OF TOTAL HOURS OF GENERAL AND SUBJECT-SPECIFIC TEACHING
The events and the respective hours of attendance for general and specialized teaching must be certified by the respective tutors during the presentation of the end-of-year report.
FINAL ANNUAL REPORT
At the end of the academic year, each PhD student must send a written report on their research activities and, in general, on the academic activities carried out during the year to the Course Secretariat (dottorato.giurisprudenza@unimore.it). This report will then be presented orally by the PhD student, accompanied by their tutor, to the PhD Program Teaching Board on a date to be set annually by the Board itself.
STUDY ABROAD PERIOD
In order to encourage internationalization and complete the doctoral student’s training, the program encourages doctoral students to undertake a period of study and research abroad. As already specified, in the case of a period of study and research abroad lasting at least three months, the requirements relating to common teaching will be considered fulfilled by this stay.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THIRD-YEAR STUDENTS
In the third year, once they have completed their studies, doctoral students must, on a date to be set by the Faculty Board, give a brief presentation to the Board itself, summarizing the content of their doctoral thesis, which is the result of their research activity. During this meeting of the Faculty Board, the admission of doctoral students to the final exam will be decided; two evaluators will be appointed for each doctoral student, to whom each student will send their thesis within the deadline set by the Faculty Board.
The evaluators, again within the deadline set by the Faculty Board, will send their assessment, which may be entirely positive – and therefore with a decision to admit the doctoral student to the first session of the final exam – or may require a correction or completion of the thesis. In this case, the final exam will be postponed to the second session, the dates of which will be set at a subsequent Faculty Board meeting.
FAILURE TO MEET ANNUAL COMMON TEACHING REQUIREMENTS (32 HOURS)
Measure: admission with reserve
The doctoral student must make up the missing hours of common teaching during the following year. If the doctoral student goes abroad for a minimum of three months, he or she is exempt from teaching for the current year, but not from making up any common teaching hours not completed in the previous year.
